But he is the one person who seems to genuinely believe in Megan's acting, and this includes Megan herself, who is having difficulty hearing her calling these days. Megan's father may be an Easter-hating atheist whom no one likes, who deserves to have a wife who, fittingly enough, gives blowjobs in ballrooms. Megan's mother starts off with a few found-in-translation slips, accidentally calling her daughter 'hopeless.' She moves on to more direct means of criticism throughout the episode, including some quite prescient assessments. At the very least, can I get a 'the ice cannot support that many hockey players'? 'The world cannot support that many ballerinas,' she says later in the episode.

One final rant on the matter: You know who's aloof and frank and fashionable and knows that that life is full of tristesse? The French. And you know what's not helping? Megan's 'the truth hurts' mother who has come down from Canada to visit, wear headscarves, half-heartedly offer soup, and generally be impossible to please. It's like if Gisele Bundchen sprained her boobs. First, we have to deal with the fact that the world's most enviable male jaw line is in pain. This was Pete's episode, and closed out with him just as it began with him (on the New Haven line). Everyone just kind of wandered around, being themselves, chatting about the future, not so much moving forward as wrapping up. Apparently, the show intentionally blew its drama wad in the previous two episodes, and for the finale, not a huge amount happened. Why? Because this whole episode was like watching a bunch of human-shaped booze-soaked cotton balls and about as interesting. Having said that, yes, I found the cotton symbolic. I don't think one has to be recapping the show to view it as a plot treasure hunt. But even typing such bland normalities feels kind of like sacrilege, because the moment the Mad Men theme song begins, viewers are on high alert. If I step back and think as simply as possible about it, the truth is, I don't think Megan and Don's relationship is complicated, and I don't think Roger's motivations are layered, and I think Sally is going to grow up a perfectly normal woman and find a nice life partner who understands her.

As a viewer, it's tempting to stop trying to see the forest through the trees and just start licking the bark. At some point this season (I can't quite put my finger on it, but maybe during 'Signal 30'), everything started to mean something. This is the danger in the details of Mad Men as a whole. I know they're not meant to be particularly symbolic, and yet I found them so. Trouble that will turn out to be a near-abscess of rotten morality and general nothingness. We find Don in the bathroom, soaking them in booze and applying them to a 'hot tooth' that's giving him trouble. The final episode 1 of this season of Mad Men opens with fluffy balls of cotton.
